how is coaching different from training?
Coaching actively unlocks the potential of the delegate. It fine tunes and develops these skills. The development activities are designed to suit the delegate's personal needs and learning styles. It also eliminates specific performance problems and can focus on interpersonal skills, which cannot be readily or effectively transferred in a traditional training environment. Coaching is performed in a live environment. It is also highly effective when used as a means of supporting training initiatives to ensure that key skills are transferred to the live environment and to the delegate rather than doing the job for them.
Training whereas, provides a wholesale transfer of new skills i.e. change in procedures, new systems, new job function, etc. The programmes are mostly generic and not tailored to individual needs. Delegates generally have to complete standard modules, so there is little room for tailoring the programme to account for existing knowledge, skills or preferences. Training is not always sufficiently similar to the live working environment to ensure effective transfer of skills and is best suited to transfer knowledge to the delegate rather than the development of personal qualities or competencies.
Additionally, coaching draws out, develops and reflects whereas training puts in, imposes and directs. Coaching is also reactive, flexible, enabling and non-judgemental whereas training is more prescriptive or instructional.
how is coaching different from therapy or consulting?
Coaching is not therapy, which goes into depth about various issues, usually dealing with the past, nor is it consulting which generally results in giving the client answers. Coaching is more action-oriented and focuses primarily on the present and future.
